| There is a variety of dances from which you can choose that fall into two main categories. The first category is Modern: Slow Waltz, Fox-Trot, Tango, Viennese Waltz. These are classical dances. They are often danced at weddings, balls and corporate affairs. During the learning process you will improve control and balance as well as leading and following . The second category is Latin: Merengue, salsa, cha-cha, mambo, samba, triple-swing, hustle, rumba. Latin dancing is without a doubt the most popular style of dance presently. These dances are fun and rhythmical. While learning this style of dance you will devellop speed, rhythm, hip movement and tempo. |
Slow Waltz The oldest european dance of english origin which was made popular in the XIX th century. The dance is expressed by movements of rising and lowering of the body and shows action and hesitation, as well as swing and rest. Fox-Trot Dance of english origin that is derived from the <<One-Step>> of the 1900 and the <<Two-Step >> of the previous century. It was popularized in 1910. The dance is expressed in directionnal movements around the floor and develops body sway as well as rhythm . Tango Dance of english origin and populorized at the beginning of the XX th century. Derived from the contra-dance of the XVII th century and later from the habanera of the XIX th century already aggressive and languorous. This dance, high in staccato contrasting movement, is made of stops and forked promenades. Valse Viennoise Some say it originates from Provence (Volte provençale), others say it comes from Italy… Viennese Waltz, symbol of nobility and refinement, took it's present form in France at the end of the XVIII th century. Viennese Waltz is caracterized by movement around the dance floor turning left and right . Cha-Cha Latin dance of cuban origin, it is the youngest and the most popular. The cha-cha, popularized in the 50's, comes from the <<Triple Mambo>>. It expresses cheerfulness and fun by it's unexpected, syncopated and rhythmical movements. Merengue Latin dance of Haitian and Dominican origin issued of African rhythm and perceived as a colourful and bewitching folk dance. Internalize and circular, this dance develops sudden movements and unexpected rhythms. Samba This Brasilian folk dance was popularized in the 30's. It's the carnaval and party dance, fun, wild and cheerful. The dance is expressed by a slight bouncing movement, turning and sliding action as well as walks around the dance floor. Rumba Latin dance of cuban origin derived of african rhythms and considered as the base of all latin dances. It's considered the dance of love. Romantic and passionate, it's expressed by contrasting fast and slow movements. Mambo / Salsa Latin dance of cuban origin derived of african rhythms also applied to rumba. This is a versatile dance wich has been influenced by the american swing. It was popularized after the second war in underground clubs in main cities of the U.S. . We danced simple, double and triple rhythm mambos. Swing Popular North American dance from the 20's derived from different regions. It's caracterized by an easy and relax allure, spontanaity of expression and gives place to freedom of movement and personnal interpretation. Hustle The hustle is a popular North American dance of the 70's. It's various origins descend from the swing, samba, cha-cha, mambo, merengue, fox-trot and even tango. From line dancing to partner dancing , the hustle went threw many changes in the 70's. It's a fast, yet smooth dance with the man drawing his partner close and then far from him. |
